Alejandro Del Rey will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG after eagling the last at Wittelsbacher Golfclub.
The Spaniard added a four under par round of 68 to his overnight total to reach 14 under par, one-shot ahead of countryman Manuel Elvira and Poland’s Mateusz Gradecki, who share second on 13 under.
Del Rey was delighted to finish his round in style and will look to continue that momentum into tomorrow’s final round as he goes in search of a maiden European Challenge Tour victory.
“It was pretty tough today and I couldn’t attack the course as much as I did during the first two rounds,” he said. “It’s great to finish with an eagle and I’m happy with my score.
“The wind was strong today and it kept switching direction which made it trickier for us in the final group. We had to play the par fives into the wind when most of the day they were playing downwind.
“It was great to play alongside Manuel and Mateusz today. I enjoyed playing with another Spanish guy because it felt like we were playing back home in Madrid.”
The 24-year-old will look to make it back-to-back Spanish winners of the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG after Angel Hidalgo triumphed in Germany last year, and Del Rey is in pole position to follow in his footsteps when he tees it up in the final group on Sunday.
“I’ve been looking forward to this moment all season,” he said. “I’ve been playing well, and I love to be in contention because I feel like that’s when I play my best golf. I’m very competitive and I’m going to do everything I can to win tomorrow.”
Frenchman Robin Sciot-Siegrist posted a two under par round of 70 to move into fourth place on ten under, one-shot ahead Slovakian Tadeáš Tetak, Scotland’s Daniel Young and France’s Félix Mory who share fifth on nine under.
England’s OJ Farrell carded the low round of the day, a five under 67, to move into a share of eighth alongside Germany’s Max Schmitt, Belgian Christopher Mivis and Swedish duo Albin Bergstrom and Jens Fahrbring on seven under.
The final round of the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG will begin at 7:30am local time on Sunday July 24, with Del Rey teeing it up in the final group alongside Gradecki and Elvira at 11:20am.
