The ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth sees one of many innovative tournament formats on the European Tour take centre stage on Australia’s west coast.
The combination of stroke play and match play offers both fans and players a unique week on the European Tour.
156 players will tee it up on the first day of the tournament at Lake Karrinyup Country Club and play 36 holes of stroke play, with 65 players and ties making it through to round three.
There will then be a further cut after 54 holes, which will see the field reduced to just 24 players for a Sunday of six-hole match play action.
There will be a play-off should there be ties for the final spot, and the top eight players after 54 holes will receive a bye into the second round of the five match play rounds.
Should the players be tied after six holes of match play, they will go to a “knockout hole” to decide who goes through.
Only one player will be left standing as champion.
The short form of match play makes for great drama, as Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat found out at least year’s tournament.
The 2018 champion, Aphibarnrat, had to make it through a nine-man play-off at the fourth extra hole to make it into the match play stages.
The drama didn’t stop there as the Thai battled his way to the final, winning two of his matches by 1 hole, a Knockout Hole victory over Yusaku Miyazato in round two and a Knockout Hole victory over Lucas Herbert in the semi-finals, before defeating Australia’s James Nitties 2&1 in the final.
