The Number One in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability mixed five birdies with three bogeys in his two-under 70 at The Belfry as he bids to claim his sixth G4D Tour title.

Canada’s Kurtis Barkley is the Englishman’s nearest challenger after a 72, a shot better off than Australian Lachlan Wood on his G4D Tour debut.

"I always want to win, that is all I want to do," said Popert, who defeated Barkley and Chris Biggins in a play-off last year.

"I know that by playing good golf the wins will come. All I want to take care of is playing good golf and hopefully I get the win so I will give it my all."

Popert was the dominant force on the G4D Tour in 2022, and his victory at The Belfry last year was the first of four wins during the Tour’s inaugural season.

He won his fifth G4D Tour title at the Australian All Abilities Championship in December and has had three further runner-up finishes this season.

After a bogey on the first hole, Popert was quickly into red figures with birdies at the third and eighth before a second bogey of the day at ninth saw him turn in a level-par 36.

But it wasn’t long before the 24-year-old, playing in the second group of the day, was building momentum again as he birdied the 11th, 14th and 17th, before a dropped shot at the last.

Popert studied at the University of Birmingham and had lectures at The Belfry ensuring course knowledge is not in short supply.

"I have a good gameplan and will try to go and have fun tomorrow," he said.

Barkley, who has recorded top-five finishes in each of his last five starts on the G4D Tour, held a one-shot lead at the turn after mixing three birdies with two bogeys on his front nine.

He suffered a setback with a double bogey at the par-three 14th, but recovered quickly and made a birdie at the 17th to ensure he will play alongside Popert in the final group on Tuesday.

Barkley is yet to win on the G4D Tour but Popert is expecting to face a stern challenge from a player

"We have got the U.S. Adaptive Open in a week and we are house sharing so he is really good friend of mine," he added.

Wood coupled three birdies with four bogeys as he continued his exceptional form this year which has seen him win four times across the Victorian Inclusive Championship, Queensland All Inclusive Championship, the New Zealand All Abilities Championship and the TPS Hunter Valley All Abilities.
