Campillo storms to the summit

Jorge Campillo got his KLM Open campaign off to a stunning start on Thursday, firing an opening 63 which contained ten birdies and a single bogey. Starting from the tenth tee, Campillo picked up four shots in a row from the 11th before making further gains on the 16th, 18th and first. The Spaniard gave a shot back at the second but recovered with a birdie on the sixth before draining a monster birdie putt at the eighth and closing his round with another gain from 11 feet to reach nine under par. He leads by three shots heading into the second round.

Luiten enjoys home support

Home hero Joost Luiten received excellent backing from the locals as he shot an opening 67 in the morning, and he was grateful for the support. The six-time DP World Tour winner said: "It was pretty busy for a Thursday, early Thursday as well. It was great to see the people out, especially on the back nine. I think they found out I was playing decent, and they came out and watched and supported."

Besseling's touch of class

Luiten's fellow Dutchman Wil Besseling also impressed on day one, showing off his short-game skills with this up-and-down at the third.
