Portugal Masters - Day four digest

Everything you need to know from Sunday at the 2022 Portugal Masters.

Jordan Smith

Smith sauntered to victory, the bubble boys did battle and Heisele signed off in style on the final day in Vilamoura.

Here is everything you need to know from Sunday at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.

Smith romps to wire-to-wire win

Jordan Smith produced a tremendous display of frontrunning to claim his second DP World Tour title with a sensational three-shot victory. The Englishman went into the final round with a two-shot lead and rarely looked like opening the door for the chasing pack on Sunday, making an eagle and six birdies in a flawless 63 to finish the tournament on 30 under par. His winning total is one better than the DP World Tour record, set by Ernie Els at the 2003 Johnnie Walker Classic, but due to preferred lies this week Smith's tally does not go into the record books. "It’s just amazing," he said. "It’s been a long grind for those five seasons, just pushing it out and finally getting over the line today. Over the moon. It’s nice getting the first win but then it’s great knowing you can do it again. It’s more down to the pressure I put on myself to get the win and now I’ve got my second one we can push on for a couple more."

Battle on the bubble

Van Driel

In one of the most dramatic weeks of the season, players were battling to get into the top 117 on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex and keep their playing privileges for next season. Everyone moved up a place on Friday after a player was removed from the Rankings and when the dust settled, that was the main difference, with Darius van Driel, who started the week 118th, the only player to move inside the top 117. "For keeping my card, I feel really, really happy," said Van Driel, who moved up to 112th after a tie for 18th. "I felt I coped really well with (the pressure). The first two rounds I felt so much pressure and after the third round it was a little bit less because I knew where I could finish to keep my card."

Heartbreak for Paratore

Italian Renato Paratore entered the week on the outside looking in and when he drained this 58-footer on the last, he faced an anxious wait from 118th on the Rankings.

There were times on Sunday when the fluctuations on the leaderboard moved him inside the line but the dreaded 118th was where he would end his season.

Farewell Sebastian

Sebastian Heisele took many by surprise when he announced on Saturday that Sunday would be his final round on the DP World Tour before moving into coaching and many of his fellow professionals took to Twitter to wish him well.

The German, of course, signed off in some style.

And even took to Twitter himself for the first time in over two years.

Happy retirement, Sebastian.
